Back in March, the FDA granted an EUA to allow the drugs chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate to be used to treat certain hospitalized COVID-19 patients when a clinical trial was unavailable, or when participation in a clinical trial was not feasible. Early but limited research indicated that the drugs, which are approved to treat malaria and have a well-understood safety profile, might be effective in treating COVID. To understand this, it may be instructive to look at some actions we’ve taken with several drugs, each of which were granted an EUA, and that received significant public attention.

Smoking can paralyze the lungs’ cilia — little hair-like fibers that sweep away mucus and pathogens — making them less effective as guards against dangerous infections. It can also make it easier for coronavirus to bind in the lung, Winickoff said, so a smaller dose of virus is more likely to cause an infection.

“We wanted nothing more than to welcome everyone back to campus this spring,” wrote Kent Devereaux, the president. “However, our community’s health and well-being remain our highest priority. We cannot ignore the science and public health data that indicates a return to campus would not be in our community’s best interests.” At York College, in Pennsylvania, President Pamela Gunter-Smith wrote to students, “This is not the time to be complacent or to give in to pandemic fatigue. Masks are required indoors in public spaces on all IU campuses for IU students, employees, and visitors beginning on August 5. Wearing a face mask, maintaining social distance and avoiding social gatherings are the best ways to minimize your risk of exposure to COVID-19. The best way to minimize your risk of being a close contact is to limit the number of people with whom you interact in person. After careful consideration, the Office of Student Conduct has developed the following guidelines to address fines at this time.

The requirement — which applies to all IU campuses — was revised after the state’s attorney general issued an opinion against it. The requirement is in place, but students no longer have to submit documentation to show that they have been vaccinated. “If any of our 12- to 17-year-olds or their parents needed another good reason, then now they can get vaccinated for a chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship,” Hogan said.
